July 2012 - Breath-alcohol tester compulsory in France

Taking a breathalyzer test following a road traffic accident has been custom and practice in the Netherlands for many years. France, however, is now taking things one step further. From 1 July 2012 onwards, each vehicle must have an alcohol tester on board. Even in vehicles from other countries.

The purpose of a breath alcohol tester is to enable drivers to test whether their blood-alcohol level is too high, before participating in traffic. Carrying out a self-test using the device will not be compulsory, however, it is compulsory to carry one unused breathalcohol tester in every vehicle. Drivers are therefore recommended to carry two sets of these as standard. If the first test has been used, the driver will still then be compliant with the legislation. From 1 November 2012 onwards, any driver who is not carrying a breath-alcohol tester will be fined €11.00.
